 PROJECT HOPE

Film is an extension of life, but sometimes, life as well is extended by film.

A boy supports his mother at 8, forms under-ground militia group at 15, switches 13 jobs by 17 and gets arrested while attempting to disarm a policeman, serves 4 ½ year imprisonment - turns into a writer with works translated in 12 languages, becomes a filmmaker with films screened more than 100 times at international film festivals and awarded throughout the world.

Mohsen Makhmalbaf, by the name he is now known to world, is one of the finest of all the Iranian New Wave filmmakers. His research for the last released film Kandahar included traveling secretly to Afghanistan during the Taliban rule, where he witnessed the chaotic situation of the country, becoming so disturbed that, after the completion of the film, he took charge of executing 80 projects in a 2 year period on education and hygiene within Afghanistan, as well as improving the living conditions of Afghan refugees in Iran.

Project Hope – is one of our interactive screening programme for those children, divided by access to opportunity, who otherwise could have become one as Makhmalbaf.

 COUNTRYWIDE SCREENING: STORIES OF CHANGE

DSC_0181

In June 2008, BEGINNING organized a film screening caravan that travelled across major cities of Bangladesh screening one of its own film, Stories of Change, by Kamar Ahmad Simon & Sara Afreen. A testament to the resilience of human spirit, Stories of Change is a real life documentary about the lives of 5 women aging from 16 to 60, coming from different walks of life, of different profession, religion and regions of Bangladesh.

Facilitated by BRAC Development Institute, the shows covered mostly the youth of semi-urban cities. The caravan travelled across educational institutions, and screenings were followed by interactive discussions amongst erudite panelists and the audience.
